What is synthetic identity fraud?

Synthetic identity fraud is the creation of a fake person by combining real data, such as a genuine national ID number, with invented details like a name and date of birth. The identity is used to open accounts, build a credit history and then borrow or spend with no intention of repaying. Because no real person is reporting the loss, it can stay hidden for a long time.

How it works

The fraudster starts with a real identifier that is easy to misuse, often one belonging to a child or someone who does not check their credit. They attach a made-up name and an email address and a phone number the fraudster controls. They apply for small accounts first and use them lightly, so that the identity builds a believable history.

Once the identity looks established, it is used for a large loan, a line of credit or a burst of purchases, and then abandoned. A single fraudster often runs many such identities.

Why it matters to an online business

  • Losses show up as unpaid debt that no real customer disputes.
  • Document and data checks can pass, because part of the data is real.
  • Fraud teams who treat each application alone miss that one person is behind many.

How businesses defend against it

Identity checks alone are not enough. The common thread across many synthetic identities is the person operating them, and that shows up in the device and the network. Teams look for the same device behind several applicants, new accounts created in bursts, disposable email addresses and scripted application flows.

  • Compare each application with others from the same device and household network.
  • Treat disposable and freshly made email addresses with suspicion.
  • Watch for the same device appearing under different names.
  • Review applications that come through a tool built to hide the applicant.

Where FingerPrint Checker fits

FingerPrint Checker does not verify documents or personal data. It supplies the device and network evidence around an application: the device ID, repeat use of the same device or normalised email, and signals such as VPN, proxy and bots. Use it next to your identity verification provider.

Frequently asked questions

Is synthetic identity fraud the same as identity theft?

No. In identity theft a real person is impersonated. In synthetic identity fraud the person never existed; a real identifier is only one ingredient.

Why is it hard to detect?

Part of the data is real and there is no victim who notices, so no one files a complaint until the debt goes unpaid.

Can device data prove an identity is synthetic?

No. It shows patterns such as one device behind many applicants, which is strong evidence to send an application for review.
