AmIUnique alternatives: other ways to test how unique your browser is

AmIUnique is a research project that studies how distinctive web browser fingerprints are. Cover Your Tracks asks the same question from the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Neither tells you what a fraud-prevention service would do with your browser; that is the gap our free test fills. For detail on a single leak, BrowserLeaks is the better fit.

What AmIUnique does

AmIUnique describes browser fingerprinting as collecting information about a device for identification and says its goal is to give developers data for designing defences. Pressing its button collects your fingerprint and sets a cookie for four months. It offers a fingerprint history, a timeline, global statistics, a Chrome extension and an Android app. Its about page describes a team of researchers studying software monocultures and diversity on the web, hosted at Inria.

Where AmIUnique and Cover Your Tracks are stronger

  • They are research projects built to measure rarity. Cover Your Tracks says your configuration is compared against a database of other visitors’ configurations it has observed recently.
  • AmIUnique offers history over time, so you can see how your fingerprint changes. We do not.
  • Cover Your Tracks also tests how well your browser blocks trackers and links to a guide on how fingerprinting works.
  • Cover Your Tracks is a project of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and AmIUnique is hosted at Inria; neither is a product sold to businesses.

Other tools at a glance

  • BrowserLeaks: many separate tests, such as graphics, fonts and WebRTC, each with its own report.
  • CreepJS: open-source research on tampering and lying browser values, aimed at testing privacy tools.
  • BrowserScan and Pixelscan: combined checks covering fingerprint, IP and, for BrowserScan, bot detection.
  • iphey: fingerprint, IP, VPN and bot checks, powered by MixVisit.

What the FingerPrint Checker free tests show

"Am I unique?" has a second meaning for a website owner: will my server recognise this visitor next time? Our test answers that one.

  • Browser fingerprint test: the visitor ID a fraud-prevention server assigns your browser, whether it recognised the browser from an earlier visit (including in a private window), how closely your signals matched the stored device, and a trust score.
  • WebRTC leak test: the addresses your browser reveals through WebRTC, set against the IP address websites see, so you can tell whether a VPN or proxy covers them.
  • No sign-up. Developers who want the same ID inside their own product can create an account with free checks.

Frequently asked questions

What does it mean to be unique in AmIUnique?

It means your combination of browser attributes, such as browser and OS version, screen resolution, fonts and plugins, is rare among the fingerprints the project has collected. It is a statement about that dataset, not about the whole internet.

Does a unique fingerprint mean I can be tracked?

A rare fingerprint makes tracking easier, but whether a site actually does it depends on the site. Browsers with built-in fingerprinting protection aim to make fingerprints look alike.

Is this comparison complete?

No. It covers what we could confirm from each tool’s own public pages on the date above, and leaves out anything we could not check. Tools change; if something here is out of date or wrong, tell us through the contact form and we will correct it.
